This program is designed to provide greater flexibility than the BS in meeting broad student interests.
Students must fulfill all General Education requirements with these restrictions and additions:
- Foundations: Quantitative Reasoning: one of MATH 130, MATH 231, MATH 152, COMP 101, COMP 161, STOR 155 or 215.
- Approaches: Natural Sciences: CHEM 101-101L and BIOL 101-101L, with a “C” grade or higher.
In addition, students must complete the following:
- CHEM 102-102L.
- BIOL 201, 202, and 205 (the core courses)
one Organismal Structure and Diversity course chosen from 271, 272, 273, 274,
275-275L, 276-276L, 277-277L, 278-278L, 279-279L, 378, 471, 472, 475, 476-476L, 478, or 579. The organismal course must include a laboratory.
- Three biology electives beyond 201 (not including 213, 291, 292, 293, 295, 296, 396, and 692), at least one with laboratory. At least one
course in biology must be numbered above 400 (not including 501, 691, and 692).
- Four additional courses in biology, other natural sciences or mathematics (these courses should also complete the Approaches Physical and Life Sciences requirement).
- Students must also complete the remaining General Education Approaches and Connections requirements, as well as the Supplemental Education requirement (either the
Distributive or Integrative option) for AB majors in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- General electives to complete the 120 academic hours are required for graduation.
Suggested program of study for BA majors:
- First year:
BIOL 101, 101L; ENGL 101, 102; Language levels 2, 3; CHEM 101, 101L, 102,
102L; Foundations: Quantitative Reasoning requirement as specified above.
Approaches and Connections: one course; Lifetime Fitness
- Sophomore year:
Two of the three Biology core courses (201, 202, and 205); Natural Sciences
electives: two courses; Approaches and Connections: four courses
- Junior year:
Remaining Biology core course, Organismal Biology course, Biology electives:
two courses; Natural Sciences electives: two courses; Approaches and
Connections: two courses; Distributive or Integrative option/free electives:
two courses.
- Senior year:
Biology electives: two courses; Approaches and Connections: one course;
Distributive or Integrative option: one course; free electives as needed to
complete 120 academic hours and other requirements.

General College Requirements
English Composition
Foreign Language
- Through level 3 of any foreign language, or level 4 if you placed out of level 3.
Mathematics
- One course from any one of the following: Math 20, 30, 31, Computer Sciences
14, Computer Sciences 16, Stat 11, Stat 31 or Operations Research 14 or
Operations Research 41.
Natural Sciences
- Biol 11 & 11L and Chem 11 & 11L. A grade of C or better in both Biol 11
and Chem 11 is a pre-requisite to proceed to the required core course Biol 50.
Social Sciences
- One course from each of two departments, from the list of approved courses that fulfill the
General College requirement for the Social Sciences persepective.
Aesthetic Perspective
- One course in Literature and one in the Fine Arts, from the lists of approved courses that
fulfill the General College requirement for these perspectives.
Historical Perspective
- One course in pre-1700 History and one in either Western or Non-Western/Comparative History
from the lists of approved courses that fulfill the General College requirement for these
perspectives. Note that you must take one course in the Non-Western/Comparative
perspective either in the General College or in Arts & Sciences.
Philosophical Perspective
- One course from the list of approved courses that fulfill the General College requirement
for the Philosophical perspective.
Physical Activity and Swimming Requirements
- Two physical activity (Phya) courses and swimming proficiency are required. Note: Phya
courses do not count toward the 12 hour minimum each semester or toward the total number of
hours needed for graduation.
Upper-Level Requirements
Biology (7 courses)
- Three core courses: Biol 50, 52 and 54.
- One organismal course with lab from among: Biol 41, 43, 47, 51, 63/63L, 72/72L, 73/73L,
80/80L, 97/97L, 103, 105, 110, 111, 114/114L, or 132.
- Three Biology electives: one of these electives must have a lab and one must be numbered
above 100.
Allied Sciences (5 courses)
- Chem 21/21L
- Four semesters of Natural Science electives: Any courses in the Departments of Biology
(above 11), Chemistry (above 11), Computer Science (above 6), Geology (above 6), Marine Sciences
(above 6), Mathematics (above 10), Physics and Astronomy (above 6, except 37), Statistics (above
6), ... Or any of the following courses: Anthropology 43, 48, 112, 114, 115, 116, 117, 170;
Biochemistry 7, 8; Biomedical Engineering 112; Environmental Sciences 51; Geography 10, 11, 12,
145; Microbiology 51, 55; Nutrition 40; Philosophy 21, 71; Exercise and Sport
Science 75, 76;
Physiology 92, 93; Psychology 10, 20, 21, 22, 23, 30, 94A, 101, 102, 103, 106, 120.
Arts and Sciences Perspectives
- Three of the following four Arts & Sciences perspectives must be completed: Historical,
Social Sciences, Aesthetic or Philosophical. Note that if you did not select a
Non-Western/Comparative Historical perspective course in the General College, that must be
one of your three choices here.
Electives
- Enough courses to reach 120 credit hours.
