This program is designed for students who intend to continue graduate study in biological or health sciences.
Students must fulfill all General Education requirements with these restrictions and additions:
- Foundations: Foreign Language: through level 4 (Language level 4 may be
taken PS/D/F unless the student places directly into level 4).
- Foundations: Quantitative Reasoning: MATH 231
- Approaches: Natural Sciences: CHEM 101-101L and BIOL 101-101L, each with a
“C” grade or higher.
- Connections: Quantitative Intensive (or second QR): One of MATH 232, COMP
101, COMP 161, STOR 155 or 215. Communications Intensive: satisfied by BIOL 101 with 101L.
In addition, students must complete the following:
- PHYS 104 and 105 or 116 and 117
- CHEM 102-102L, 241, 241L, 261, 262-262L.
- BIOL 201, 202, and 205 (the core courses)
one Organismal Structure and Diversity course chosen from 271, 272, 273, 274, 275-275L, 276-276L,
277-277L, 278-278L, 279-279L, 378, 471, 472, 475, 476-476L, 478, or 579. The
organismal course must include a laboratory.
- Four biology electives beyond 201 (not including 213, 291, 292, 293, 295,
296, 396, and 692), at least two of them with laboratory.
At least two courses in biology must be numbered above 400 (not including 501, 691, and 692).
- Two additional courses in biology, other natural sciences, or mathematics.
- Students must also fulfill the Foundations, Approaches, and Connections
requirements and take enough free electives to accumulate 123 academic hours.
Suggested program of study for BS majors:
- First year:
BIOL 101, 101L; ENGL 101, 102; Language levels 2, 3; CHEM 101, 101L, 102,
102L; MATH 231 plus second course in Mathematics, Computer Science or
Statistics/Operations Research from the approved list, Approaches and
Connections: one course; Lifetime Fitness
- Sophomore year:
Two of the three Biology core courses (201, 202, 205); Language level 4;
CHEM 261, 241, 241L, 262, 262L; Approaches and Connections: one or two
courses
- Junior year:
Remaining Biology core course, Organismal Biology course, Biology electives:
three courses; PHYS 104 and 105 or 116 and 117; Approaches and Connections:
three courses.
- Senior year:
Biology electives: two courses; Natural science or biology electives: two
courses; Approaches and Connections: two courses; free electives as needed
to complete 123 academic hours.

Bachelor of Science in Biology

General College Requirements
English Composition
Foreign Language
- Through level 4 of any foreign language. The fourth course may be taken pass/D/fail unless
you have placed into level four in your placement test; in this case you must take the class
for a grade.
Mathematics
- Math 31 plus a second course that could be any one of the following: Math
32, Computer Science 14, Computer Sciences 16, Stat 31 or Operations Research
14 or Operations Research 41.
Natural Sciences
- Biol 11 & 11L and Chem 11 & 11L. A grade of C or better in both Biol 11 and Chem 11 is a
pre-requisite to proceed to the required core course Biol 50.
Social Sciences
- One course from each of two departments, from the list of approved courses that fulfill the
General College requirement for the Social Sciences persepective.
Aesthetic Perspective
- One course in Literature and one in the Fine Arts, from the lists of approved courses that
fulfill the General College requirement for these perspectives.
Historical Perspective
- One course in pre-1700 History and one in either Non-Western/Comparative or Other History
from the lists of approved courses that fulfill the General College requirement for these
perspectives.
Philosophical Perspective
- One course from the list of approved courses that fulfill the General College requirement
for the Philosophical perspective.
Physical Activity and Swimming Requirements
- Two physical activity (Phya) courses and swimming proficiency are required. Note: Phya
courses do not count toward the 12 hour minimum each semester or toward the total number of
hours needed for graduation.
Upper-Level Requirements
Biology (8 courses)
- Three core courses: Biol 50, 52 and 54.
- One organismal course with lab from among: Biol 41, 43, 47, 51, 63/63L, 72/72L, 73/73L,
80/80L, 97/97L, 103, 105, 110, 111, 114/114L, or 132.
- Four Biology electives: two of these must have a lab and two must be numbered above 100.
Allied Sciences (7 courses)
- Two semesters of Physics: Phys 24 and 25 or Phys 26 and 27.
- Four semesters of Chemistry: Chem 21/21L, 61, 41/41L, and 62/62L.
- Two semesters of Natural Science electives: Any courses in the Departments of Biology
(above 11), Chemistry (above 11), Computer Science (above 6), Geology (above 6), Marine Sciences
(above 6), Mathematics (above 10), Physics and Astronomy (above 6, except 37), Statistics (above
6), ... Or any of the following courses: Anthropology 43, 48, 112, 114, 115, 116, 117, 170;
Biochemistry 7, 8; Biomedical Engineering 112; Environmental Sciences 51; Geography 10, 11, 12,
145; Microbiology 51, 55; Nutrition 40; Philosophy 21, 71; Exercise and Sport
Science 75, 76;
